Indecisiveness is an issue that pesters me a lot. I cannot help but overthink what if there are negative consequences of my actions. What if there is a better string of words or events that could lead to a better outcome. And most of the times my worries are rightfully placed. Almost always there is 100% certainty that the choice i make is not the best course. Choices made by us humans are largely influence by immediacy. whichever is the most pressing issue on our mind takes precedence in decision making to some value. It might be obvious as we tend to “learn from our mistakes”.
I do not think learning from our mistakes is as simple as it might seem. Whereas this is a commonly used term. I tend to think the rule of immediacy explains it better. Once we have experienced a similar event in life. When we re-experience it, we feel familiar and not as immediate as something new. Sure it could be learning and adapting but their exist cases where it does not and this could only be explained by immediacy. So owing to this belief, it is simple to see how waiting to think things through could be a safer choice in the hopes of analysing the thoughts and ideas more methodically so as to form a more informed decision.
Well this is the first instance where our theme for today comes into view. The point when the decision was first needed is the point where we first analysed the options, we realised we need to make a decision and we made the first subconscious decision to postpone the decision making process. I tend to think of the decision making process in my mind as a court jury. Where different sides will present evidence and reasons why their choice is the best and the ” court ” ends the moment a decision is made. There could be reschedules for the discussion, there could be cases that take decades and ones that are suspended indefinitely. However the ones that I want to focus on are the ones that seem to be settled out of court.
Since our court is the main thinking box settling outside is equivalent to not involving the decision committee in making one. And how may this happen? Lets have a scenario where A decision must be made but we push it away. But while it is still on hold then something happens that forces our hand. An example could be a paper submission, for this submission, we had the idea to submit like a few months early but kept busy and pushing the decision. And before we could get ready the deadline passed before we noticed. Something like this might be known commonly as indecisiveness. It is when we delay a decision and usually because we aren’t sure and eventually a “choice” is forced upon us. Then how and where was the decision made. Surely it was forced onto us. But that’s where the hidden choice comes in. The hidden choice of postponing the decision. This always seems a safer decision as mentally it alleviates the mind of self blame. It makes the person shift the blame away as there was not an active choice made. We keep quiet and hope for the better solution to appear before us somehow. We tend to blame it on fate and destiny. I have made this choice the go to choice so much it has become part of my nature that at times i do not even think of it as a choice. However when I re evaluate and think of this as a choice then things change. All of a sudden I have alot of blame on me for my poor decision making.
The purpose of this blog is to remind the reader to be conscious of this choice to delay. Its is not indecisiveness. It is the choice to hide from your problems, turn a blind eye to it and think it will disappear. Take it as having the power to save a person being robbed but you keep quiet and walk by simply because saving them would be a hassle. As such it makes sense that you also weigh this choice as a full on choice and weigh its potential losses. The longer you take the more the robber will steal and the more the chance at recovery of the stolen goods.
